Bowers Harbor by Moonlight ©

Our most romantic tour!

(Thunder Moon/Sturgeon Moon/Harvest Moon/Hunters Moon)

The full moon rising over the high ridge that runs down the middle of Old Mission Peninsula always takes us by surprise.  When we finally catch sight of the pale lunar disk floating in the glowing Belt of Venus (an astronomical phenomenon that occurs after sunset) the sky is beginning to darken overhead and evening is settling in on Bowers Harbor.  Join us for a leisurely paddle around the Harbor with stops at “the Can” (a well-known channel marker) and Tucker Point to watch the sunset, before making a wish on the first star you see and heading home by the light of the full moon.

PADDLER PREP

Greetings Paddlers!  We’ve put together a great schedule of tours for this summer and we’re looking forward to paddling with you.  Here are a few tips to help you prepare for a great day on the water.

What to wear:  Dress in layers—it can get cool on the water even on the hottest days.  Bathing suits are fine as a base layer, but bring shorts and a t-shirt, and a fleece.  Wear shoes that can get wet.  If it looks like rain bring a rain jacket with hood (or a rain hat)—we paddle in the rain, as long as it’s not a thunderstorm or downpour.

Clothing tips:  Avoid wearing heavy cotton clothing like jeans—they get heavy when wet and don’t keep you warm.  You can get a nasty sunburn on your legs and shoulders while out in the boat so it’s a good idea to wear loose, comfy clothing to protect you when you’re paddling.

What to bring:  sunscreen, water bottle (we’ve got water if you forget), camera (if not waterproof then at your own risk)

What to leave in the car:  towel, dry clothes and shoes

What NOT to bring:  anything that will be ruined if it gets wet!

What we provide:  14’ or 14.5’ Tsunami touring kayaks by  Wilderness Systems, paddles, PFDs and safety lights for evening paddles.  The PFDs have pockets that will hold your keys and camera.  Your tour guides have cell phones so you don’t have to risk yours.

CUSTOM TOURS & CATERING OPTIONS

We can also arrange custom tours on Bowers Harbor, Old Mission Harbor and at Old Mission Lighthouse Park to fit your schedule.  Costs for custom tours vary depending on location and length of outing.  The minimum cost for a custom tour is $60/person with a minimum of 2 people.  Contact us by email (mary@traversbaypaddler.com or susan@traversebaypaddler.com) or phone (231-715-1454) for additional custom options, including catered snacks and meals.

Power Island Circumnavigation Paddle

There’s only one way to get to Power Island in the summer, and that’s by boat.  A tiny jewel lying just south of Neah-ta-Wanta Point in the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay, the island is home to deer, raccoons (lots of raccoons), eagles and many other “up North” critters.  A paddle around the island reveals a variety of shoreline features and water conditions, from the wild and rocky northern and western shores to the sandy, shallow, Caribbean-like southern end.  This tour includes landing on Power Island for some hiking and hunting for Petoskey stones (the Michigan State fossil).  Pack your own picnic or let us cater.  NOTE:  because this tour involves an open water crossing we do not recommend this tour for beginning paddlers; previous open water experience is recommended.
