PaddleAway Tours:  2015 Schedule

When Lake Michigan’s water level was at near historic lows several years ago, a variety of shore-loving plants colonized a few small atolls near Old Mission Lighthouse.  We call them the “Lighthouse Islands” and they’re a great place to paddle in shallow water and enjoy the beach at Lighthouse Park.

Sturgeon Moon Paddle©

The August full moon is known around the Great Lakes as the Sturgeon Moon since August was traditionally the month when these ancient and venerable fish were most abundant and easily caught.  The Sturgeon family has been known to exist since the days of the dinosaurs.  Lake Sturgeon were a staple among Native Americans of the Great Lakes—a Sturgeon might live over 100 years and weigh as much as 200 pounds—but commercial fishing practices in the mid- to late- 1800’s almost eradicated the species.  Today, Lake Sturgeon are making a slow comeback thanks to conservation efforts, and this paddle under the full August Sturgeon Moon is both an appreciation of nature and a celebration of stewardship.  For tour details see July 1 Thunder Moon Paddle, above.

Shipwreck Paddle

For the more adventurous paddler:

The sailing ship Metropolis ran aground during a snowstorm on November 24, 1886, and sank two days later during an attempt to refloat her.  No lives were lost and most of the cargo—Michigan white oak lumber and iron—was saved.  On this tour we paddle from Lighthouse Park around the tip of Old Mission Peninsula and southward to the shipwreck.  The keel and ribs are visible in approximately ten feet of water off the east shore of Old Mission Peninsula—if you know where to look!  Though most of this paddle is on open water, and we are never far from shore, “big water” can present some challenges even on a calm day so we recommend paddlers have some previous experience on open water.  Bring your own sack lunch or let us cater lunch (contact us for cost; all food preferences cheerfully accommodated).

PADDLER PREP

Greetings Paddlers!  We’ve put together a great schedule of tours for this summer and we’re looking forward to paddling with you.  Here are a few tips to help you prepare for a great day on the water.

What to wear:  Dress in layers—it can get cool on the water even on the hottest days.  Bathing suits are fine as a base layer, but bring shorts and a t-shirt, and a fleece.  Wear shoes that can get wet.  If it looks like rain bring a rain jacket with hood (or a rain hat)—we paddle in the rain, as long as it’s not a thunderstorm or downpour.

Clothing tips:  Avoid wearing heavy cotton clothing like jeans—they get heavy when wet and don’t keep you warm.  You can get a nasty sunburn on your legs and shoulders while out in the boat so it’s a good idea to wear loose, comfy clothing to protect you when you’re paddling.

What to bring:  sunscreen, water bottle (we’ve got water if you forget), camera (if not waterproof then at your own risk)

What to leave in the car:  towel, dry clothes and shoes

What NOT to bring:  anything that will be ruined if it gets wet!

What we provide:  14’ or 14.5’ Tsunami touring kayaks by  Wilderness Systems, paddles, PFDs and safety lights for evening paddles.  The PFDs have pockets that will hold your keys and camera.  Your tour guides have cell phones so you don’t have to risk yours.

                                    Power Island Circumnavigation Paddle

Power Island lies a short distance west of Bowers Harbor, a tantalizing back-country escape just an hour’s paddle from the world-class wineries and eateries of Old Mission Peninsula.  But strong cross-currents and prevailing westerlies make this trip more technically challenging than our shallow-water tours.  We circumnavigate the island with its diverse shoreline—Caribbean-like on the south end, glacial boulders on the northwest side, and everything in between along the way—with a stop for hiking and lunch.  Bring your own sack lunch or let us cater lunch (contact us for cost; all food preferences cheerfully accommodated).

Thunder Moon Paddle

Catch sunset over the Leelanau Peninsula and a rising full moon over Old Mission Peninsula on this tour.  The July full moon has many names—Thunder, Buck and Hay are some—but we like Thunder Moon for the oxymoron:  What shows itself more quietly than the rising moon?  The tour departs from Bowers Harbor public launch, follows the shoreline out to Tucker Point and into the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay to watch sunset and float until the moon rises, then paddle home by moonlight.
